Speech recognition works - and doesn't

Part of my research is about Speech Recognition technology. I like to tell people who ask me about speech recognition that it works really well and at the same time it's fundamentally broken. It's nice that someone (sort of) agrees:

No matter how cleverly a speech recognizer is trained and taught to adapt, however, it may be that until we have machines that can truly understand what's being said that they will always be limited compared with humans. Perhaps "perfect" speech recognition will require passing something equivalent to the Turing Test—the challenge to make a machine's conversation indistinguishable from that of a human. If that's the case, then we may need to keep hold of our keyboards for quite a while yet.
